The worse-than-expected contraction in the New Zealand economy in the third quarter has led investors to fully price in an outsized 50bps cut at the Reserve Bank’s next meeting in February. Meanwhile, latest data revealed the country’s trade deficit narrowed in November, driven by a rise in exports while imports declined. Additionally, the ANZ-Roy Morgan survey showed consumer confidence improved in December. On the corporate front, Meridian Energy was the best performing stock, surging 5.4% after partnering with Nova Energy to operate the Te Rahui solar farm at Rangitaiki near Taupo. Other top performers included Infratil, which gained 4.8%, and Port of Tauranga, up 4.6%. For the week, the index advanced 1.2%, ending two consecutive weeks of losses.
