Retail trade in Thailand edged higher to 20.8% year-on-year in October 2024, from a three-month low and downwardly revised 20.5% gain in the previous month. The upturn was primarily attributed to higher sales of non-durable goods (9.7% vs 6.4% in September). Additionally, sales rebounded sharply for durable goods (9.3% vs -0.7%). On a monthly basis, retail trade surged 14.2% in October 2024, significantly rebounding from a 7.8% slump in the preceding month.

Private investment in Thailand dropped 1.8% month-on-month in November 2024, following a 4.5% increase in the previous period. This decline was attributed to a decrease in investment for machinery and equipment, due to lower commercial vehicle registrations, particularly pickups and tractors, along with a drop in capital goods imports after a significant rise in the prior month. Similarly, construction investment fell due to lower sales of construction materials and a reduction in permitted construction areas, especially for residential and industrial projects.

Personal consumption in Thailand declined by 0.4% month-on-month in November 2024, reversing a 0.8% increase in the previous period. The drop was driven by decreases across most major categories, despite government cash transfer measures. Notably, non-durable goods consumption fell due to lower fuel sales, while durable goods consumption declined primarily from reduced motorcycle registrations. However, sales of passenger cars and pickups saw a slight increase, though overall levels remained low, while spending on services stayed stable. Meanwhile, the consumer confidence index rose, supported by improved domestic tourism following the receding of floods in the northern and northeastern regions, along with the government’s stimulus program.
