The annual inflation rate in Malaysia edged down to 1.8% in November 2024 from 1.9% in the prior month, below market forecasts of 2.1%. Prices moderated for both transport (0.4% vs 0.7% in October) and health (1.2% vs 1.4%). At the same time, cost continued to decline for clothing (-0.3% vs -0.2%) and communication (-3.9% vs -1.7%). On the other hand, inflation was unchanged for alcoholic beverages (at 0.8%), furnishing, housing, household maintenance (at 0.5%), recreation (at 2.0%), education (at 1.5%), restaurants (at 2.8%), and miscellaneous items (at 3.4%) while ticking up for housing (3.2% vs 3.1%). Meanwhile, food prices increased the most in a year (2.6% vs 2.3%). Core consumer prices, excluding volatile fresh food items and administered costs, rose by 1.8% yoy, holding steady for the third month while staying at their slowest pace in six months. Monthly, consumer prices declined by 0.1%, the first drop since July 2021, after a 0.2% rise in October.
