Imports to Taiwan surged 30.4% to USD 37.51 billion in December 2024, accelerating from a 19.8% rise in the previous month and beating market forecasts of a 15.1% gain. This marked the strongest expansion since June, driven by increased purchases for information, communication and audio-video products (71.1%), parts of electronic products (56.6%), machinery (32.6%), and chemicals (13.8%). Meanwhile, imports of mineral products (-1.5%) fell, particularly petroleum (-2.1%). Among main suppliers, purchases went up the most from South Korea (81%), followed by ASEAN countries (38.1%), Mainland China & Hong Kong (31.1%), Europe (28.9%), and Japan (27.5%). However, imports declined from the USA (-5.8%) and Middle East (-1.3%). Considering the full year of 2024, imports were 12.2% higher compared to the same period last year at USD 394.47 billion.
