The Qatar Central Bank lowered its lending rate by 30 basis points to 5.10% in December 2024, following the US Federal Reserve’s 50 basis point cut to its benchmark rate, now at 4.5%-4.75%. Additionally, the central bank lowered the deposit rate and repo rate by 30 basis points to 4.60% and 5.85%, respectively. Qatar’s monetary policy typically aligns its interest rate policy with the Fed due to the Qatari riyal's peg to the US dollar.

The trade surplus in Qatar narrowed to QAR 15.1 billion in October 2024 from QAR 19.0 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, marking the smallest trade surplus since April 2021. Exports edged down 0.1% year-on-year to a six-month low of QAR 27.5 billion, while imports surged 23% from a year earlier to a nine-month high of QAR 12.4 billion. For the first ten months of the year, the country posted a surplus of QAR 180.60 billion.

The annual inflation rate in Qatar stood at 0.83% in October 2024, almost unchanged from 0.82% in the previous month. Upward price pressures came from transport (0.97% vs -0.39% in September), clothing & footwear (0.80% vs -1.3%), and recreation & culture costs picked up (18.51% vs 12.6%). On the other hand, prices continued to fall for transport (-0.2% vs -0.3%), food & beverages (-0.46% vs -3.3%), and housing & utilities (-1.09% vs -4.2%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased by 1.11%, the most in ten months, following a 0.33% gain in September.

Qatar's Financial Centre PMI rose to 52.9 in November 2024 from 52.8 in October, reflecting stronger growth in the non-energy private sector and surpassing the long-term average of 52.3. The increase was driven by record stock purchases and improved suppliers' delivery time. Moreover, New business inflows expanded for the 11th month, supported by marketing efforts and improved client demand, while backlogs decreased as capacity expanded. Employment surged at the fastest rate in survey history over the past three months, accompanied by strong wage inflation as firms boosted salaries to retain skilled staff. While cost pressures eased slightly from October’s peak, firms lowered prices for goods and services for the fourth consecutive month to remain competitive. Firms remained optimistic about the year ahead, citing economic development, investment, population growth, and strong demand in real estate and construction.
