The BLOM Lebanon PMI rose to 48.1 in November 2024, up from October’s 44-month low of 45, reaching its highest level in four months. Business activity continued to decline, driven by the impact of Israel's conflict with Hezbollah, which heightened security concerns and economic instability. Weak demand persisted, with subdued purchasing power curbing new orders, though the contraction in non-domestic sales eased. Input purchases and inventories declined for the fifth straight month, while supplier delivery times worsened to a 20-month high due to poor road conditions and insecurity. Additionally, employment remained slightly contracted, and backlogs of work fell for the 14th consecutive month. Rising costs, particularly for goods, led firms to increase prices for the sixth month in a row. Meanwhile, pessimism persisted, fueled by fears of escalating regional conflict.

Prices moderated for transportation (5.0% vs 7.2% in September), housing & utilities (16.9% vs 20.3%), recreation & culture (12.3% vs 31.1%), miscellaneous goods & services (37.3% vs 41.7%). Meanwhile, prices continued to rise for food & non-alcoholic beverages (22.8% vs 19.7%) and clothing & footwear (27.6% vs 24.5%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 2.02% in October, rebounding from a 0.18% drop in the prior month, which was the first deflation since February 2022.

The BLOM Lebanon PMI fell to 45.0 in October 2024, down from 47.0 in the previous month, marking the steepest contraction since February 2021. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has significantly disrupted business operations, leading to a marked decrease in both new orders and new export orders. Consequently, employment levels have dropped, although the rate of job shedding was only marginal. Moreover, supply chains have faced disruptions, which have hampered purchasing activity and affected company inventories. On the pricing front, the overall rate of input price inflation accelerated to a nineteen-month high, while output prices also rose at the fastest rate in just over a year and a half. Lastly, business confidence dipped to a sixteen-month low, mainly due to concerns over the prolonged nature of Israel's war in Lebanon, which dented future output expectations.
