The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) will auction CNY 60 billion of six-month bills in the Hong Kong market on January 15 to boost demand for the currency overseas, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said in a statement. This issuance will be the largest on record since the Chinese central bank began conducting regular bill auctions in the city in 2018. The move aims to reduce the yuan's liquidity in the market, increase funding costs, and make it more expensive for traders to short the currency. Since Donald Trump won the US elections in November, the PBoC has actively used its daily reference rate to support sentiment in the yuan. Recent declines in the currency, due to concerns over a sluggish Chinese economy and the potential for US tariff hikes, have raised doubts among traders about the PBoC's commitment to defend the yuan. So far, the central bank has demonstrated its resolve by stabilizing the yuan through daily fixings and pledging to prevent excessive exchange rate fluctuations.
