The HCOB France Manufacturing PMI dropped to 41.9 in December 2024, down from 43.1 in November, consistent with preliminary estimates, marking the sharpest decline since May 2020. Subdued demand led to a further fall in new orders, prompting a sharp decrease in production, its steepest drop since May 2020. Similarly, input purchasing declined at the second-fastest rate of the year, and inventory levels were slashed, with stocks of purchases falling at the steepest pace since June 2009. Employment dropped at the sharpest rate in five months, and backlogged orders were depleted at the quickest pace in over four years. To stimulate sales, firms lowered prices for the third consecutive month, despite a mild rise in input costs. Business sentiment remained negative, with concerns about persistent demand softness, political uncertainty, and client investment reluctance dampening confidence for the future.
