The FTSE MIB trimmed sharp initial losses to close marginally down at 33,766.3 on Friday, its lowest since early December and marking a second consecutive day of declines. Traders reassessed the Fed's policy outlook after a softer-than-expected increase in the core PCE price index, the Fed’s preferred gauge of underlying inflation, during November. Meanwhile, market participants reacted to US president-elect Donald Trump's tariff threat to the EU, while also assessing the political turmoil in the US. Among individual stocks, Saipem (-6.1%) was the worst performer, hit by profit taking and the declines in crude oil. Telecom Italia also faced pressure (-3.7%), on the day of the first examination of the 700 million offer presented by the Treasury and Retelit for Sparkle.On the upside, Amplifon and Cucinelli led the gains, up 1.6% and 1.5%, respectively. For the week, the FTSE MIB shed about 3.2%.

Industrial producer prices in Italy fell by 0.5% year-on-year in November 2024, easing from a 2.8% decrease in the previous month. This marked the 22nd consecutive month of producer deflation, though the softest pace in the sequence, as prices declined at a softer pace for intermediate goods (-0.2% vs -0.6% in October) while it almost stationary for capital goods. Meanwhile, prices continued to fall for energy and construction. On a monthly basis, producer prices rose 1.2% in November 2024, the highest reading since July, from 0.7% in the previous month.

Industrial sales in Italy rose 0.5% from the previous month in October 2024, rebounding from a 0.3% decline in the previous month and marking the first expansion since April. Among main industrial groupings, turnover rose for consumer goods (2.3%) and capital goods (0.1%). However, turnover decreased for energy (-12.5%) and intermediate goods (-0.1%). Turnover increased by 1.7% in the domestic market, offsetting the 1.6% fall in export sales. On a yearly basis, industrial sales fell 5.3% in October 2024, an improvement from the 5.7% drop in the previous month.

The Italian consumer confidence index edged lower by 0.3 points from the previous month to 96.3 in December of 2024, the lowest in four months, and below market expectations that it would have risen to 97. The drop was owed to greater pessimism in the Italian economic backdrop (96.1 vs 97.8 in November), and concerns about the future Italian economy (93.3 vs 93.8). In the meantime, the personal climate edged slightly higher (96.4 vs 93.2).
