The S&P/TSX Composite Index dropped 0.5% to below the 24,450 mark on Wednesday, hitting a two-week low as investors remained cautious ahead of tomorrow’s GDP data, while strong US economic growth tempered expectations of dovish action from the Fed. Mining stocks led the decline, with Agnico Eagle falling 1.4% ahead of its post-market earnings report. Barrick Gold and Wheaton Precious Metals followed, losing 2.1% and 2.3%, respectively. In contrast, energy giants Suncor, Imperial Oil, Canadian Natural, and Cenovus traded flat as oil prices steadied on signs of reduced US supplies. Meanwhile, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem pointed to early signs of impact from recent rate cuts, anticipating further evidence in future data and suggesting that additional rate cuts could follow if economic conditions align, with the aim of boosting growth and demand.
